About Me

Editing is a joy. It is an honor to take the creation of an author and make it richer, clearer, and more imaginative. Each writer has a unique voice and narrative style. Whether the manuscript is a work of scholarship or a novel, the editor’s hand should remain invisible. The work of a good editor is to remain behind the scenes, actively supporting an author’s goals through meticulous care and good judgment. The tightening of the nuts and bolts is essential to the end result of a well-crafted piece of writing.

All good editing begins with love of the written word. For me, whether I am proofreading, copyediting, or providing substantive editing, my love of editing and my penchant for perfection makes this line of work deeply gratifying. I cannot imagine it being otherwise.

Testimonials

I have known Heidi George for several years and I am much impressed by her intelligence, meticulousness, and good judgment. She loves editing and takes great care with the texts on which she works. Last year she worked with me to prepare a long manuscript for submission to a university press. She handled standardization, formatting, reference notes, and other stylistic issues. I loved working with Heidi and was happy with the resulting manuscript.

Over the last twenty years I’ve consulted with Heidi George to assist with editing my adoption agency’s newsletter, public relations materials, and contracts. In addition, she has edited and proofread appellate legal briefs and legal memoranda. Her work ethic is exacting and meticulous. Our work relationship has endured for so many years due to her excellent editing skills and her easy going and friendly demeanor. I would highly recommend Heidi to anyone who expects nothing but the best.

I highly recommend Heidi George to anyone looking for an experienced and professional editor. Heidi edited my PhD dissertation, and she did so with skill, moral support, and a strong commitment to my work. As a non-native English speaker, I began my dissertation with doubts that I could write an academic manuscript. I attribute most of my success to her editing skills and her belief in me. I could not have written my dissertation and defended it before my adviser and committee without her help. Most remarkable to me as a non-native speaker was the way she retained the most significant portions of my writing and took care not to impose her writing expertise on my unique style. I am grateful to her for preserving my artistic voice. Her thoughtfulness and warmth are beyond praise. As I continue to perform and begin a career in teaching, I know where I will turn for future editing help. Highly recommend!

Heidi writes very well, so I could count on her to compose clear, interesting, and informative messages to the membership of the Penn Association of Senior and Emeritus Faculty.  I often asked her to draft letters that went out over my signature and always sought her advice and editing skills on documents that I wrote. Heidi has a deep interest in writing and a strong commitment to effective style and correct mechanics.

I think what sets Heidi George apart as an excellent editor is not only her writing acumen, but her true respect for writing. She takes care to protect the integrity of the piece she is working on. Not only is she professional, but she stays “in the voice” of the writer. She edited my late mother’s writings, including short stories and poetry, for an anthology our family is putting together. I have worked with other editors before Heidi, but no one has done such excellent work while still keeping my mother’s “voice” in any piece she edits. I can't recommend Heidi George highly enough.
